Battle of Olustee

Here are some selected sketches from the Battle of Olustee Reenactment, at Olustee, Florida. It was so exhilarating to draw. Over 1,000 reenactors in full, authentic uniform, even mounted units, cannons, and incredible pyrotechnics. They came out of the trees, Union and Confederate, and had it out. About an hour long. It was difficult to choose what to draw, having so much to look at, and everyone constantly in motion. I had about 2 seconds, maybe 5 to scramble out a recognizable sketch. It made me think of the artists who would be physically present at a battle, and go through the same process as me, only they weren't watching cap guns being fired, but real bullets. It was rather disquieting. At the same time, I respect the amount of presence it took to draw something so raw and intense. I hope to do more reenactments in the future.

This was all in Sharpie marker in a sketchbook, about 8"X8".

Hope you enjoy!

  2. Keep up the sketches from life, they will serve you well.

Try to memorize something interesting and draw from memory, this will also develop an invaluable tool (and rare) (Followed your blog from CA org))
